Ingredients

For the Pastry:

3 cups all-purpose flour

1 tsp salt

1 tsp turmeric powder (for color)

1/2 cup unsalted butter, chilled and cubed

1/2 cup vegetable shortening

6-7 tablespoons cold water

For the Filling:

1 lb ground beef (preferably lean)

1 medium onion, finely chopped

1-2 cloves garlic, minced

1 tsp fresh thyme leaves (or 1/2 tsp dried thyme)

1 tsp allspice

1 tsp paprika

1/2 tsp cayenne pepper (adjust for heat preference)

1 cup beef broth

2 green onions, chopped

Salt and pepper to taste

1 tablespoon vegetable oil

Instructions

Make the Pastry:

    - In a large bowl, mix the flour, salt, and turmeric powder until well combined.

      - Add the chilled butter and shortening to the flour mixture. Use a pastry cutter or your fingers to rub the fat into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

        - Gradually add cold water, one tablespoon at a time, mixing until a dough forms. It should be firm but not sticky. Divide the dough into two discs, wrap in plastic, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.

          Prepare the Filling:

            - In a skillet over medium heat, add the vegetable oil. When hot, sauté the onion and garlic until translucent.

              - Add the ground beef, breaking it apart as it cooks. Season with thyme, allspice, paprika, cayenne pepper, salt, and pepper. Stir and cook until the beef is browned.

                - Pour in the beef broth and let it simmer for about 5-7 minutes, until the liquid reduces slightly and thickens. Stir in the chopped green onions and remove from heat. Let the filling cool.

                  Assemble the Patties:

                    - Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

                      - Roll out one disc of dough on a lightly floured surface until about 1/8-inch thick.

                        - Using a round cutter (about 5-6 inches in diameter), cut out circles. Repeat with the second dough disc.

                          - Place about 2-3 tablespoons of the beef filling in the center of each circle. Fold the pastry over to create a half-moon shape and press the edges together tightly. Use a fork to crimp the edges for a decorative touch.

                            Bake the Patties:

                              - Place the patties on the prepared baking sheet. Brush the tops with an egg wash (beaten egg mixed with a tablespoon of water) for a golden finish.

                                - Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown.

                                  Serve:

                                    - Allow the patties to cool slightly before serving. Enjoy them warm on their own or with your favorite dipping sauce!
